Mercy Health System of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, named Diana Smalley president and CEO, effective April 2. She will also serve as president and CEO of Mercy Health Center. Smalley, 55, succeeds Michael Packnett, who left in April 2006 to be president and CEO at Parkview Health, Fort Wayne, Ind. For the past 10 years, Smalley held leadership positions at Alegent Health, Omaha. ... Hillcrest Health System, Waco, Texas, announced the 'mutually agreed resignation'' of Art Hohenberger, president and CEO, on March 1. A successor has not been named, but a spokesman said an executive leadership team will continue with day-to-day operations. ... Stephen Long retired as president and CEO of Nebraska Methodist Health System, Omaha, after nearly 37 years with the two-hospital, not-for-profit system. Succeeding Long, 60, is John Fraser, president and CEO of the system's Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Omaha, since 1997. ... Parkland Health & Hospital System, Dallas, named Michael Silhol its new chief counsel, effective April 23. Silhol succeeds Frank Collura. Collura stepped down for personal reasons in June 2006, a Parkland spokeswoman said. Most recently, Silhol was senior vice president and general counsel at Radiologix, a Dallas-based provider of diagnostic imaging services.
ASSOCIATIONS
The Federation of American Hospitals said Bruce Gilbert, general counsel for Universal Health Services, King of Prussia, Pa., was named chairman-elect for a one-year term, replacing Keith Pitts, vice chairman of Vanguard Health Systems, Nashville. Pitts became chairman, replacing Victor Campbell, senior vice president of Nashville-based HCA, who will serve as immediate past-chairman.
FINANCE
Antoinette Gawin was named chief marketing officer at GE Healthcare Financial Services, charged with helping to develop the company's business strategy. Gawin, 41, most recently served as general manager for customer advocacy.
IN MEMORIAM
Jeptha Dalston died March 2 of cancer. He was 75. Dalston, known as 'Jep,'' is the former president and CEO of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration and the Accrediting Commission of Education for Health Services Administration. Those organizations became the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education in 2004. Dalston previously served as CEO of three teaching hospital systems.
